"The NT is unprepared, exposed and exiting the energy transition” ALEC condemns dumping of NT 2030 emissions reduction target
The Country Liberal Party (CLP) has dumped its election commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43 percent by 2030. This follows decisions seven days before Christmas in December 2024, to scrap the Territory’s only climate mitigation policy, the “Large emitters Policy”, and in March 2025 to scrap the 50 percent renewable energy target by 2030. The Northern Territory alongside Western Australia are the only states that do not have some sort of climate change or net zero legislation.
The CLP’s attack on climate change policy and emissions reduction initiatives occurs in the context of climate records, and extreme weather events across the Northern Territory. Mparntwe Alice Springs experienced its hottest 100 days on record, with 40℃ average maximum temperatures between 1 December 2024 to 10 March 2025. At the same time, the Top-End experienced its latest monsoon on record and there have been cyclones across Northern Australia, severe drought in Victoria and South Australia, extreme flooding in New South Wales and Queensland, and major fires in Western Australia.

“The NT is unprepared, exposed and exiting the energy transition.”
“Several climate policies and emissions reduction targets have been scrapped, while Alice Springs experienced its hottest 100 days on record and the opportunities and benefits of transitioning to renewable energy are being squandered and lost.”
“Rather than support Territorians to get off dirty and expensive diesel generators and access cheap and reliable solar with battery storage, the Northern Territory Government is subsidising the gas industry to open another carbon bomb in the Beetaloo Basin, largely for gas export.”
“There is total disinterest from this CLP Government to address the existential impacts posed by climate change to the livability and wellbeing of communities across the NT, including Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs.”
“The Australian Government's inadequate climate and emission reduction policies are failing, and nowhere is that clearer than across Northern Australia, with efforts to lock-in high-emitting gas projects from the North West Shelf to the NT’s Barossa and Beetaloo gas basins.”
