South Australia and Northern Territory buffel grass workshops on Anangu Lands

October 2024

Connecting, sharing and strategising to improve buffel grass management across NT and SA. Working together for national action, coordination and a Weed of National Significance listing in 2025.

Excellent multi-day workshop at Yulara and Uluru between Indigenous rangers, Muṯitjulu community members, Parks Australia, NT Government weeds branch, Alinytjara Wilurara Landscape Board from South Australia, researchers and buffel action network members.

We did site visits to areas actively managed at Uluṟu, undertook vehicle hygiene workshops, and did sessions on making a management plan, approaches to improving management in National Parks and culturally significant sites, as well as key pathways for buffel grass spread such as road and rail corridors, and sessions on opportunities to map buffel grass invasion. We talked about Anangu leadership which was critical to buffel grass weed declaration in the Northern Territory, as well as the impacts of buffel grass invasion to environments, cultures, human health and public safety across affected areas.

Learnings from this workshop will boost action at Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park, Katiti-Petermann Indigenous Protected Area, NT National Parks and road and rail corridors across the southern NT which are key vectors for the spread of buffel grass.
