Summer Ready Community Workshop report back & next steps

Thanks everyone for coming to the Summer Ready community workshop lastSunday. It was great to hear so many people share their local knowledge of practical ways to make houses cooler, plan for fire season and limit tree loss after the storm, and to brainstorm together some proactive ways we can work together to organise and advocate to make our town a safer and more livable place over summer.

We formed 2 organising groups, one focusing on mutual aid and one focusing on advocacy - notes below.

We are going to have a follow up meeting/working bee to progress these ideas on November 15th at CMS library again, save the date!

Mutual Aid Group:

Join the mutual aid whatsap group to be part of ongoing organising

The mutual aid session generated some brilliant ideas for community responses to the upcoming summer! Some examples included creating maps for community to identify friendly pools, cool spots, and shelters; mass distributing a guide on how to affordably heat-proof our homes; and connecting our neighbourhoods on a street-by-street level to support one another. People were eager to develop connections with NGOs to support people who fall outside their jurisdiction, build heat resilience before the summer fully hits, and expand upon existing mutual aid networks.

We are eager to expand upon these plans and would love as much help as possible to do so! Please get in contact (whether or not you were at the meeting) — whatever help you can offer will be deeply valued!

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  1. Develop connections with NGOs
    1. They can refer people to us if people fall outside their jurisdiction
  2. Centralised mutual aid committee
  3. We want to build resilience (development) rather than be stuck in emergency response (aid)

Advocacy Group

Join the advocacy whatsap group to be part of ongoing organising

The advocacy group brainstormed a bunch of ideas mostly around increasing access to transport, cool spaces and water.  We then talked a bit about who to talk to about these different ideas, and starting thinking more about bubbler/tap access and pool access. Again it was hard to get to a finished campaign in 45 minutes, but we have some good starting ideas and would love to keep working on these things!

Another outcome was a desire to share more local knowledge about simple and affordable ways people can make their houses and gardens more resilient to heat, storms and fire We will be working together with local experts to share this knowledge further through a series of summer ready social media posts and emails, and potentially more specific workshops down the track. If you’d like to help with this, or have any questions about any of the above, please get in touch!
