Our climate is changing and desert communities are responding. Local leaders discuss the impacts of climate change on health, housing and water and what we can do to create climate-resilient communities.

This conversation is happening at a critical time when the NT Government is attempting to fast-track legislation that will significantly weaken our already shoddy water laws. The Statute Law Amendment (Territory Economic Reconstruction) Bill 2021 is due to be tabled in Parliament next week and includes amendments that will make it easier for developers to get the water they want, and concentrate even more power in the hands of a single decision-maker.
Speaking on the panel will be local leaders and experts:
- Dr Simon Quilty, senior specialist physician and advocate for improved housing and energy policy in the NT;
- Senior Policy Officer Georgia Stewart, Central Land Council, involved in challenging the Singleton Station water licence and CLC’s campaign for a Safe Drinking Water Act;
- Stacey Ella, Managing Lawyer for the Environmental Defenders Office, with expertise in NT water policy and legislation.
- Facilitated by Lyla Dash.
