Support our EOFY Fundraising Appeal for a Thriving Desert!

Support Our WorkALEC’s annual End of Financial Year fundraiser is running throughout May and June. We have been a long-standing, trusted and powerful voice of advocacy for ecological justice in the arid lands for over 40 years. We are a small, but strong team, informed by our vision:

To protect nature and support ecologically sustainable development in the arid lands.  Healthy futures for arid lands and people

Help us raise at least $150,000 before June 30th and support the essential work of Central Australia’s peak environmental organisation to keep the arid lands thriving.

This year, our Thriving Deserts Appeal is being launched alongside a $25,000 matched gift pledge from a generous anonymous donor. If there was ever a time to support ALEC’s work in the arid lands, it is this year.

ALEC is successfully driving change on national blindspots in environmental and social justice. Here are some ways your past donations have supported our work this year:

  • We have partnered with the Ali Curung Community and Running Water Community Press in the Ali Curung water justice project. This was the focus of nationwide discussion on First Nations water justice featuring on the ABC Drum program for its NAIDOC week special.
  • Following our Supreme Court challenge, we continue to oppose the Singleton Water Licence, Australia’s largest freshgroundwater licence. A drop of water is precious in the desert. People and ecosystems depend upon it. Following immense community pressure last year the highest level Environmental Impact Statement process was assigned under the Environment Protection Act 2019. 
  • This month the NT Government recognised the invasive impact of buffel grass through a commitment of $750,000 for buffel management, on the back of twelve months of sustained advocacy by ALEC, including:
    • Petitioned Minister Kate Worden and coordinated an open letter from over 50 local and national organisations demanding the declaration of Buffel grass as a class A/B weed, 
    • Led community education around the impacts of buffel grass,
    • Platformed Traditional Owners’ voices,
    • Supported on the ground local action was a strong voice for action at the National level.
  • We held the line in opposing dangerous fracking in the Beetaloo Basin. We supported a grassroots movement, enabling local people to scrutinise proposals and share their concerns, making these felt in Canberra.
  • We are stronger when we work together. ALEC supported a connected and engaged community through the two Alice Springs community gardens, supporting local action groups, and active outreach around local issues through panels, events and markets.

What impact will your donations have this year?

  • Sustain our connection with the Water justice campaign. We will continue to partner with and deepen our commitment to the Ali Curung Community and Running Water Community Press to keep fighting for water justice. We will sustain the pressure to prioritise the environment and local people ahead of short-term profits throughout the environmental impact assessment of the enormous Singleton groundwater licence.
  • Support our Biodiversity campaign. In this election year, we will be pushing for strong buffel management in the NT and a national focus on buffel. We will focus on ecosystem resilience, including recognising dingoes' place as a culturally important keystone species.
  • Apply scrutiny on mining expansion, industrialisation and extractivism. The arid lands are an increasing focus for mining activity with global pressure to fast-track critical minerals extraction, as well as pressure to become a dumping ground for international radioactive waste. 
  • Support the continued staunch work of the decade strong ALEC campaign for a Frack Free NT. It’s the last roll of the dice if Australia is to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Support a sustainable, resilient and thriving community for people to live. We will continue to support the community led work of the two incredible community gardens, local action groups and we will welcome all who want to engage with ALEC as volunteers or visitors at Gap Rd.
