This is the government’s first climate policy announced since they were elected, and demonstrates the extent of dystopian state capture. The Finocchiaro Government has repeatedly made decisions that benefit the gas industry. The first action of the NT Climate Resilience Plan is to “accelerate the production of low emissions energy, including from the Beetaloo Subbasin".
This plan follows the:
- Scrapping of the NT renewable energy target in March 2025
- Abandoned its election pledge to establish a 2030 emissions target in June 2025
- Scrapped the large emitters climate policy in December 2024
- The NT and WA are the only jurisdictions nationally with no climate change or net-zero legislation.
NT government data has previously warned that developing a gasfield in the beetaloo would release up to 117 million tonnes of greenhouse gas, equivalent to 22 per cent of Australia's current annual emissions.

“While many residents in the top end are still homeless months after the latest climate tragedy, the government is prioritising pouring more fuel on the gas powered fire of climate disaster over planning to minimise the harms caused by intensified heatwaves, cyclones and fires.”
“The science is clear, gas is not low emissions and gas is not a transition fuel. Territorians will not be gaslit by this government’s attempts to portray gas expansion as climate resilience”
