The Alice Springs Future Grid Reference Group is seeking members!

Want to learn more about how the Future Grid team is working to increase renewable energy in the Alice Springs electricity system? Want your say on how we can empower the community to play their part in achieving the NT’s 50% by 2030 renewable energy target?

ALEC is seeking expressions of interest from people who would like to be members of the Reference Group, to provide valuable input on Future Grid activities and represent community interests around renewables.

91% of people want more renewables in the grid!

The results from the Future Grid survey show our community is already leading the transition toward clean energy.

⚡ Close to 3,000 households rooftop solar system.
⚡ Over 50% of people intend to invest in a battery in the next 10 years.
⚡ Large majority support a higher renewable energy target for the NT.


Heal Country! Gardens 4 Healing NAIDOC event

To coincide with the NAIDOC 2021 theme – Heal Country! – Gardens 4 Healing is a community celebration to acknowledge and learn about the work of traditional custodians who continue to care for and heal country.

Join us for a fun-filled afternoon including a garden tour, tree planting ceremony, and performances of poetry, song and storytelling. Plus, free pizza and damper!

This is a CovidSafe event, and all guests are asked to please RSVP.


On-county buffel grass workshop – in pictures

ALEC is proud to have been part of the on-country buffel grass workshop last week at Umuwa, APY Lands. It was a great opportunity for groups from across the Great Victoria Desert to come together, with a full schedule that included knowledge sharing and ranger presentations; accredited training from the Bachelor Institute; and buffel grass spraying and data collection using the Fulcrum app.

Home and business battery scheme extended

The NT Government has announced a $2.8 million boost in funding to the home business and battery scheme, to continue to drive uptake of battery storage. The grant has been extremely popular and saw over 230 discounted battery installations. There are now close to 100 batteries in Alice Springs.

From August 2, the grant will be restricted to battery systems that have been assessed as virtual power plant (VPP) capable, to help support power system security and reliability.


Food Summit 2021 - food security in Aboriginal communities

Aboriginal communities experience food insecurity up to seven times the national rate. The aim of the Food Summit project is to empower Aboriginal communities to identify local issues and advocate for improvements in their food security.

The Food Summit 2021 will discuss a wide range of issues and work to develop Aboriginal community-led solutions to food insecurity.

ALEC Gala Dinner SOLD OUT

This Saturday's Gala Dinner at Olive Pink has sold out, set to be a fun-filled celebration with many old and new friends gathered to toast to ALEC's long history, and its future.

A big thank you to all the artists and collectors who have generously donated works for the silent art auction, to raise vital funds for ongoing environmental protection. And thanks to the local businesses that have also gifted goods and services.

The future of FOGO in Alice Springs

Food and green waste decomposing in our landfill is the largest single contributor of climate warming gases, and it's important that we tackle the issue as a community.

You might have read the recent ABC Alice Springs article about the end of trial. ALEC is meeting with Council to discuss ways to maintain the momentum towards implementing a FOGO waste composting system.
