Australian Conservation Foundation spokesman Dave Sweeney said the project posed serious threats to the environment and drinking water of Alice Springs.

"It is a highly problematic mining technique and it has been linked here and overseas with groundwater contamination," he said.

"It is not a clean process and it's not a controlled process.

"It is very difficult to monitor or control movement of ground water and in arid Australia to be deliberately involved in mining radio active materials and heavy materials is irresponsible."
