Solar City

did you know that...

  • Alice Springs has around 300 days of sunshine every year³
  • During a typical sunny day in Alice Springs, one square metre exposed to the sun at noon will receive approximately 1000 Watts (1kW) of energy from the sun.
  • Over half of Alice Springs houses are harnessing the suns energy with solar hot water
  • An unshaded single pane window in full sun transfers 100% of the solar heat into your house5.

Alice Springs is set to become Australia’s red centre energy champion!

Alice Springs is one of just five cities around Australia to be selected to participate in the Australian Government's Solar Cities program.

Over the next six years, the Alice Solar City project will empower the community to become energy champions through improved awareness, energy efficiency measures, solar energy technology and smart electricity metering and tariffs.

The project aims to make Alice Springs a model for the rest of Australia and the world to follow. By the end of the project, the estimated reduction in CO2 emissions will be the equivalent of taking one quarter of all Alice Springs vehicles off the road

How can you get involved with Alice Solar City?

Residents

There are many simple things you can do today to start reducing your energy use and save money.

Through Alice Solar City, there are incentives, products and services you can access which are designed to help you use less energy and reduce your power costs.

The changes you make will not only benefit you. They will also make a difference to the community and the environment.

If we all make a few small changes, our combined efforts will make a huge difference. By the end of the project, the estimated reduction in CO2 emissions will be the equivalent of taking almost one quarter of all Alice Springs vehicles off the road.

Your efforts will also help reduce the need for expensive upgrades to existing power infrastructure.

Businesses

The commercial and public sectors currently consume over 50% of Alice Springs power and are integral to the success of Alice Solar City.

By using less energy and being more efficient with the energy that is used, your organisation can reduce costs, reduce its impact on the environment and help defer some of the energy infrastructure required to meet the needs of our growing community.

Participation will not only make your organisation more competitive . . . being an energy champion will raise your profile as a leader in the community.
