On the 28th of March ALEC went out to Tjitjikala with an interpreter to talk to the community about the planned Chandler Salt Mine and Waste Storage Facility by Tellus Holdings. ALEC had the opportunity to run through the full extent of the waste storage component of the project to the surprise and anger of the community.
It quickly became apparent that the community has not been properly informed about the waste storage aspect of the project. They were not aware that Tellus is planning on storing vast quantities of hazardous liquid and solid waste potentially over geological time. They were particularly concerned about the possibility of leaching and contamination of their water sources from heavy metals such as lead.
Since learning of the true nature of the project the community is now rallying in opposition. There will be another meeting in the next few weeks to provide the community with as much information as possible to help them decide a way forward.
